  • Signed and dated 1844 John Frederick Herring Snr. Herring senior studied with Abraham Cooper RA, a top historical and equestrian artist of the period. Herring specialised in painting winners of the Derby and St Ledger, as well as many other famous horses and Jockeys of his day.He also painted small scale studies of Animals, Rabbits,Ducks, Goats, birds and others. Towards the end of his career he turned to painting Farm yard scenes, which were much copied by his son John Frederick Herring Jnr, a fine artist but not up to his fathers standard. Herring Senior exhibited, ar the 'Royal Academy' from 1818 to 1846 and the 'British Institution'. He also exhibited 88 works at the Society of British Artists in Suffolk Street, London. Many of Herring Seniors works were engraved. No collection of works by English Sporting Artists would be complete without several Herring Seniors.
