Profile on Daniel Crane

A Message from John Francome OBE, taken from his introduction in the catalogue for the Daniel Crane London Exhibition in 2002.

Here is an artist who really understands his subject and is not afraid to depict it in detail, harking back to an earlier age of sporting art. Daniel Crane’s beautiful watercolours are reminiscent of the great sporting artists of the last century.

He manages to convey the elegance and movement of the horse in immediately recognisable scenes. This is a wonderful show of the best equestrian art I have seen in years.

Daniel has moved on since 2002 and is now acknowledged as the top English Artist painting equestrian scenes. This I might add is not just my view, but comes from arguably the Top and most important sporting magazine sold monthly worldwide.

Daniel Crane was born in Norfolk in 1969, as the youngest son of a farming family so was always been surrounded by animals and the country side. He grew up with a respect and love for them both and from an early age showed a keen interest in field sports, which became more and more apparent and important to him as his painting developed.

Daniel has held a number of Exhibitions in London and still enjoys the direct approach of exhibiting at the main Horse Trials as depicted in this photograph taken at the 2016 Game Fair. Daniel studied art at the Lincoln College of Art & Design, and still feels that with every painting completed there is a new discovery and thus his learning process remains dynamic. His early work featured caricatures which fell in line with his sense of humour to be quickly followed by watercolours of hunting scenes and especially hounds, the painting of which he excelled in.

Today his work has developed into fine sporting scenes of Racing, hunting and equestrian landscapes painted in oils and watercolours. Recently Daniel showed me a painting of a small boat in a misty landscape, it was painted in the impressionist style, no sooner had I seen it that it was sold. His talent is really quite extraordinary. Daniel has completed many prestigious commissions and is fiercely protective of his clients, saying only that there are many collectors of his work world wide, not only from the horse world but from all walks of life together with a smattering of Royalty.
